For the Furniture and Product Design Class at ELISAVA, I designed and built a two piece modular camp table. This designed was inspired by many years of camping with folding plastic tables which often become cluttered with cooking supplies and food. The intention with a two-level table is that all food and cooking supplies are stored on the lower level or hanging on the side, so the top level remains clear for food prep and cooking. An additional constraint was to make this table fold up small enough to fit inside my backpacking bag, and be light enough to carry on short hikes.
To achieve a combination of light weight and high strength, I used aluminum tubes to create the frame with an aluminum composite panel fastened on top to create a partial torsion box. The legs and braces rotate around UHMW plastic bushings during assembly, and are secured in position by removeable cotter pins. All hardware uses nylon locknuts so fasteners do not unthread during assembly.
The table can additionally be used as a low table or coffee table by only setting up one table.
