In the Furniture and Product Design Class at ELISAVA, we were tasked with modifying an IKEA Ivar chair to fit a specific user profile. My Industrial Design student teammate and I decided to address the population who suffers from back pain by giving the chair a user-customizable back rest. This way, the user can support their back in the specific way it needs.
We started by sketching designs and created our chosen model in Solidworks. From here we created a 1:6 scale laser cut model, and then created the full scale model using a wood CNC, 3D printer, and hand tools. The outcome was a chair comfortable for any user, but particularly useful for those with back pain.
